Army Major, Soldiers, Vigilantes Killed in Niger

Four military personnel, including an Army Major and four vigilantes, have been reported killed by suspected terrorists in an ambush attack at Igu Village, in Munya local government area of Niger State.

The incident came hours after terrorists invaded some communities in Paikoro and Munya local government areas, killing three people, including the village head of Beni, Alhaji Salihu Ahmed and abducting about 70 persons.

The attack, which led ro the killing of the security personnel, occurred on Wednesday evening.

The soldiers were said to have run into the ambush by the gunmen at Igu village which is 10 kilometers from Sarkin Pawa on their way back to the scene where after engaging the terrorists in a gun battle to recover the missing bodies of some of the local vigilantes.

It was learnt that the gunmen who were not subdued from an earlier battle, were in the bush trying to bury their dead.

They were said to have ambushed and overpowered the soldiers who were going to recover the bodies of the vigilantes.

According to a security source, only one soldier managed to escape from the attack.

An update on the Tuesday attack has it that majority of the abductees are still in captivity while some whose families can afford N10,000 to N20,000 in new currency notes were released by the terrorists.

Two patrol vehicles belonging to the Joint Security Taskforce were discovered to have been vandalised by the gunmen with the windscreens and tires destroyed with bullets.

Niger Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar said there have been series of attacks in the State, adding that a statement on the latest incident would be issued.
