Court Convicts Obi’s Campaign DG Doyin Okupe of Money Laundering

A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Doyin Okupe, the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council of the Labour Party, and Peter Obi.

The former Senior Special Assistant on Media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was found guilty of breaching the Money Laundering Act.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Okupe on a 59-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of funds to the tune of N702 million.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, in his judgment on Monday, found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16(1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act, for accepting cash payments without going through the financial institution, in excess of the threshold allowed under the Act.
