NBA Elects Yakubu Maikyau New President

The Nigerian Bar Association has elected a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Yakubu Maikyau,  as its new National President.

Declaring Maikyau winner of the electronically conducted poll on Sunday, Chairman, Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Ayodele Akintunde, said Maikyau polled 22, 342 votes  ( 64.6 per cent of total votes) to beat his closest rival, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), who secured 10, 842 votes, that is, 31.4 per cent of total votes cast.

Also, Jonathan Taidi,  polled 1380 vote or 4 per cent of the total votes cast in the election.

Maikyau,  will succeed the incumbent President of the Association, Olumide Akpata, whose tenure ends in August 2022.

Reacting to the development on Sunday, Maikyau, who described the outcome of the poll as “good one” development, promised to provide transparent leadership and take the association to higher heights.

Others elected include, Adesina Adegbite as General Secretary and Habeeb Lawal as National Publicity Secretary.

Maikyau is an established legal practitioners in the country who has several certifications and had occupied previously pivotal positions.

He obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1989 and was called to the Bar on December, 1990.

Appointed as SAN in 2011, Maikyau moved on to secure a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, United Kingdom, while being enlisted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, (CIArb.) in September, 2014.

He’s also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) Nigeria.

The senior lawyer was said to have graduated from Rhema Bible Training Centre, Nigeria and has sponsored several community development projects in Kebbi state, his home state.

In July  2016, Maikyau was appointed member of the Panel of Conciliators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a  position held until July 2022.

 The  new NBA President is also a member of the Governing Council of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero.
