Wike nwokē, You’ve Fought The Good Fight, But a Stitch in Time…

It is a famous dictum that when one insists (too much) on claiming his rights (especially against overwhelming public opinion and pleadings to let go for peace to prevail), such a person may end up with the blame. As in, you too do sef!

The raging controversy in the PDP continues to generate more twists and turns than the road to Mambilla Plateau, that picturesque tourism Haven in Taraba State.

Ironically, the Governor of that State, the enigmatic and taciturn Darius Ishaku is, according to ‘breaking news’, one of the latest key personalities to be dragged in to the roiling cauldron. Along with other Governors – Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Ikpeazu (Anambra, Duoye Diri (Bayrlsa), Ishaku is reported to have now formed a counter force to Governor Nyesome Wike and his group which has, since the party’s National convention, retained a stranglehold on the jugular of the PDP in protest over the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as its Presidential candidate going into the 2023 elections. This in spite of its National Chairman Iorchia Ayu and BoT Chairman, Walid Jibrin being from the northern part of the country in an obviously lopsided polical arrangement which did the southern part of the country no favours. That Atiku chose Wike’s brother next door Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State, as his preferred Vice Presidential Candidate over Wike was, to the cantankerous Wike, a final insult. For this, Wike went rogue. Using the enormous State resources at his disposal, it was not long before he recruited other Governors like Samuel Ortom (Benue); Seyi Makinde to his stable of fighters against ‘injustice’.

All efforts to placate the group fell on deaf ears as the group’s demands became increasing audacious and ridiculous, including Wike being given full guarantee of picking appointees into choice ministerial appointments! Talk of dividing the spoils even before the battle! Pacifist and mature politician that that he is, the old war horse Atiku continued his peace overtures to Wike and his band of rebels while surreptitiously working to garner support for his and Ayu’s group. And it is an open secret that, even without State funds, Atiku can match Wike pound for pound, dollar for dollar! It’s ready to see who will blink first in this high stakes’ stare-down, and my bet is on the Zege Mule!

My advise to Wike and co. would be that, having fought the good fight (for indeed theirs is a principled stance), it is time to stand down before they get left in the lurch. They must now cut their losses and rejoin the rest of the party. It is too much to hope that they can buck the PDP system; some ties that bind simply go too far back! It is time to let the ego-tripping go and begin the fence-mending. A stitch is time… is not a new saying.
